Declaration of the Independent Commission for Human Rights in North Africa

The Independent Commission for Human Rights in North Africa strongly condemns the repeated extrajudicial killings of Sahrawi gold prospectors by the Algerian army. These incidents, including those in October 2020, April 2024, May 2024, and the most recent ones, are egregious violations of human rights and life.


Details of Incidents:

1. October 2020, near Dakhla Camp: Two Sahrawi prospectors, Emcha Ould Hamdi Ould Sweilem and AliyinAl Idrisi, were burned alive by Algerian military forces who set fire to their mining pit.

2. April 2024, near Dakhla Camp: Three Sahrawi prospectors were killed in a deadly chase and shooting by Algerian military patrols.

3. May 2024, Akidi Region: Several were killed, including two identified Sahrawis (Majidi Ould Adda Ould Ibrahim Ould Ahmim and El Bouhali Ould Haydas) and an Azawadi child, in a drone attack by the Algerian National People's Army.

4. November 2021, Tindouf Camps: One person was killed (Lakbir Ould Mohamed Ould Sid Ahmed Ould El Markhi) and another seriously injured (Ould Mohamed Fadel OuldLaman Ould Chghibine) by the Algerian National Gendarmerie.

5. Recent Incident (April 9, 2025): At least two Sahrawi prospectors were killed and several injured in the Tindouf camps, reportedly by an Algerian patrol in the El Argoubarea near Dakhla camp. The victims include Sayed Ahmed Ould Gholam Ould Belali a father of two girls , from the Ait Moussa and Ali tribe, and Ali Mahmoud Fando, from the Riqabat tribe, Ahl Qasim Ibrahim .


We call for an immediate and transparent investigation into these atrocities and demand protection for Sahrawi civilians. The international community must hold the Algerian government accountable for these violations.


Call to Action:

• The international human mechanisms and AHCPR should start Independent Investigation into these incidents.

• International community should provide Immediate Protection for Sahrawi refugees in Tinduf camps.

• Accountability from Algerian authorities for these human rights abuses.

• Hold Polisario accountable for its mismanagement of the refugees camps.

 

We remain vigilant in defending human rights in North Africa.and to name and shame Polisario leaders and Algeria.

For these human rights violations committed against the saharwiin Tinduf camps .
