The NGO Steering Committee Meeting held on 24- 25-26 July 2025 in Banjul, The Gambia, brought together sub-regional and diaspora focal points to strengthen coordination, governance, and strategic planning for human rights advocacy across Africa. The primary objectives were to evaluate current performance, refine terms of reference, enhance external engagement, and plan for the upcoming NGOs Forum. Key recommendations included adopting objectives focused on “Amplifying African Voices” to protect human rights defenders through resilience and innovation; improving collaboration among regional and diaspora groups; leveraging technology and accountability mechanisms; and developing practical capacity-building workshops. Additionally, the committee advocated for transparent guidelines, enhanced data sharing, and the creation of digital platforms to sustain engagement and advocacy momentum beyond the forum. The meeting underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships and youth involvement to reinforce the human rights movement continent-wide.

During the first day of the Citizens' Forum in Malabo, organized by the African Union ECOSOCC, 130 civil society leaders from across Africa and the Diaspora convened to exchange practical experiences and strengthen collaboration on peace and security issues, particularly regarding the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). The opening session emphasized the need for civil society to not only respond to crises but to actively shape reforms, including UN Security Council reform through the C-10 initiative. Following this, discussions highlighted how civil society actors are making significant contributions on the ground, while subsequent sessions focused on broader democratic transformation. The day concluded with meaningful exchanges that established a solid foundation for future discussions, including the upcoming drafting of a new social contract for Africa.
